Cicada nymphs live underground for years. They burrow through the
soil, suck sap from tree roots, and slowly grow. Then, on warm summer
nights, they dig to the surface and leave their burrows. They crawl
across the ground, find trees, and climb to safety.

Ethan and Aaron hunt for the nymphs on sidewalks near their home.
They put captured nymphs in large plastic jars.  Overnight the nymphs
shed
their skins and adult cicadas emerge.  Their wings inflate
with blood.  The next morning, when the cicadas’ wings are dry and
stiff, the boys set them free.

Cicada killer wasps catch adult cicadas.  They paralyze them with
their stingers and drag them down into their burrows.  The worm-like
baby wasps will eat the cicadas.
