Cicada Hunt!

Identifying what we found

Sowbug (top and bottom views of the same one)
(Some people call these "potato bugs" or other
names.  Scientists call them "isopods.")

(bar is 2 millimeters long)

Ant                              Ant

(bar is 2 millimeters long)
(We see lots of ants on the lids.  There are so many that
we're afraid they will eat the newly natched nymphs!)

"Flying" Ant                Fly                     Midge or Mosquito

(bar is 2 millimeters long)

Beetle                        Larva*
*a larva is a "baby" insect
(of a beetle, butterfly, or fly)

(bar is 2 millimeters long)

Springtail (top and side views of the same one)

(bar is 2 millimeters long)

Spider           Mite                    Mite

(bar is 2 millimeters long)

Maybe this larva was a baby cicada -- but we
doubt it.  Here are some enlarged pictures
of it.  (The pointed end seemed to be the head):

The springtail sort of looked like a baby
cicada from the top.  But viewed from the
side, you can see its "springer" (blue
arrow in the enlarged photo below):

So, last summer and fall, we never did
catch a newly hatched nymph.

We'll start looking again in July, 2001.
